[Richard Murphy, va nàixer a Milford House, Irlanda, prop de la frontera Mayo-Galway en 1927. De xiquet va viure a Ceilan, l’actual Sri Lanka. Va estar intern en escoles d’Irlanda i Anglaterra. Fou becat a Oxford als 17 anys i va estudiar Filologia Anglesa amb C. S. Lewis. Des de 1951 fins a 1981 va viure gran part del temps a Claddaghduff, Connemara. Des de 1971 fou poeta resident en nou universitats americanes. Ara divideix el seu temps entre Dublín i Durban, Sud-àfrica.
