[Richard Murphy, nació en Milford House, Irlanda, cerca de la frontera Mayo-Galway en 1927. De niño vivió en Ceilán, la actual Sri Lanka. Estuvo interno en escuelas de Irlanda e Inglaterra. Fue becado en Oxford a los 17 años y estudió Filología Inglesa con C. S. Lewis. Desde 1951 hasta 1981 vivió la mayor parte del tiempo en Claddaghduff, Connemara. Desde 1971 fue poeta residente en nueve universidades americanas. Ahora divide su tiempo entre Dublín y Durban, Sudáfrica.
