o unspeakable night of nights
that burning darkness which aches and bites
and you streaked beast in the shrub
I knew you were near and I went on and shrugged
o your looming presence among the leaves
o the cry of the soul which silently heaves
the madness of the heart the craving of the mind
you were behind
with paws and teeth and a hoarse groan
I heard the footsteps and I was alone
there were the trees and there was the moon
there was the fear and there was a tune
o shivers and phantasies beyond all hopes
o what kind of wind which wakens and dopes
what kind of scream and what kind of delight
what kind of secret you streaked knight of night
